Railings Stairwells, stairwells, ramps and balconies that are not delimited by walls must have railings that limit the risk of personal injury as a result of falls. Railing fillings with fasteners must withstand the dynamic impact of a person. General advice Railings in stairwells should be at least 0.9 metres high. If an opening at the side of a stairwell is larger than 0.4 meters in both longitudinal directions and the floor height is more than 3.0 meters, measured from floor to floor, the railing should be at least 1.1 meters. The railings on the stairwells within the individual residential apartment should be at least 0.9 metres high. If the floor height is more than 3.0 metres, measured from floor to floor, the railing should be at least 1.1 metres. Railings on the stairwells outside the individual apartment and railings on balconies and walkways should be at least 1.1 meters high. Rules on glass balustrades can be found in section 8:35. Railings in areas where children can be present must be designed so that children do not injure themselves as a result of climbing or crawling.
